As part of our Volunteers' Week celebrations, we're sharing stories about volunteers across Gloucestershire this week. Today we share Ian's story about what it's like to be a trustee for Sunflowers Suicide Support and how this experience enabled Ian to develop new skills - personally and professionally.

"Being a trustee is a hugely rewarding role that provides me with an opportunity to make a difference in our local community. Practically, I help shape the charity's strategic direction, ensuring its resources are used effectively to benefit those who need it most in Gloucestershire. Personally, being a trustee has brought real balance to my life and enhanced my wellbeing ten-fold. I find it’s a chance to apply my skills, learn new ones (of which I have learned many), and work alongside a team so passionately dedicated to the cause that its impossible not to be inspired, motivated and in absolute awe of them.

The added bonus to all of this is that those new skills I have learned have been incredibly valuable to me whilst starting a new engineering company. Being a trustee has really helped me expand my skills in financial discipline, strategic thinking, external collaboration and staff wellbeing. I believe this has made me a much more rounded person, professionally and personally, and I am so glad I took the journey towards being a trustee.

Sunflowers Suicide Support, the charity I am a trustee for, is a remarkable Gloucestershire based organisation that is dedicated to supporting individuals and families bereaved by suicide. We aim to provide comfort, understanding, and practical assistance to those navigating the aftermath of such a loss. Additionally we also work to prevent suicide through education, training and community engagement.

In short, I would say being a trustee of such a wonderful organisation is one of the highlights of my life. I feel truly blessed to be able to work alongside my colleagues within the charity, and indeed the sector as a whole, and hope to do so for many years to come".

About Volunteers' Week

Volunteers’ Week is a campaign that runs throughout the UK during the first week of June each year. It's a time when organisations are encouraged to celebrate the contributions of their volunteers (including your trustees of course!). Volunteers' Week has been running for over 40 years and is a really great campaign to utilise if you'd like to thank current and past volunteers for their much-valued time, commitment and dedication to your organisation.

Get involved

Each year, our team love seeing the range of stories and celebrations shared by local charities and community groups in Gloucestershire. We encourage as many local organisations to get involved as possible, in their own unique way, so that we can all come together and celebrate volunteering within our county.

Here's a few ideas about what you could do to get involved this year:

1. Send your volunteers a thank you card to show them how much their support means to your organisation - you can send an e-card or one in the post, it's up to you.

2. Share your volunteer stories on your website, in your newsletter or on your social media. Not only do volunteer stories help recognise your current volunteers – they may also attract new volunteers to your organisation.

3. Organise a coffee morning or brunch for your volunteers to connect with each other and your team. From coffee and croissants to afternoon tea, there are lots of ways that you can bring people together to celebrate. You could even ask your team to do a 'bring and share' lunch or to bake some cakes to share.
